Volksverein (Baden)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Volksvereine were founded by the Baden Democrats to create an organization that differed from the Patriotic Associations of the Baden Liberals. At the time of the Baden Revolution of 1848/49, there were no organized parties that were clearly separated from one another.

In Baden, during the second Offenburg meeting on March 19, 1848, a Central Committee was formed with Friedrich Hecker as head to build up the people's associations. After the uprising in May 1848 these were banned. The bans could not be upheld and from December 1848 the people's associations were reorganized under Amand Goegg . By May 1849, more than 400 associations with around 35,000 members had been established.

The organizational structure of the Baden Volksvereine was based on the administrative structure of the state. District associations were founded in the official cities to initiate the local people's associations. The state committee was at the head of all popular associations .

With the people's assembly on May 13, 1849 in Offenburg , the people's associations took the lead in the Baden May Revolution .
