The people of Wind GmbH develops, finances, builds and operates wind turbines . Volkswind acts both as a developer and as an independent producer of electrical energy ( IPP ), and with more than 40 wind farms is one of the largest operators of wind turbines in Germany. The company was founded in 1993 by former Enercon employees Martin Daubner and Matthias Stommel. Volkswind's main location is in Ganderkesee , Germany, with branches in France, England, Poland, Bulgaria and the USA. Volkswind was acquired in 2015 by the Swiss energy supplier Axpo .

History and milestones

Volkswind was founded and the first wind turbine with a capacity of 500  kW was installed in 1993. In 1998, the world's largest wind turbine with an output of 4.5  MW (model: Enercon E 112 with a height of 124 m and a Rotor diameter of 112 m). By 2001 the company had more than 50 MW installed capacity.

2002 first foreign activity with the establishment of a subsidiary in Paris, France. Further subsidiaries from 2015: in Gollnow , Poland, in Manchester , Great Britain and at the same time construction of the world's highest wind turbine to date (V90 model from Vestas with a height of 125 m) in the Egeln-Nord wind farm. In 2006 the largest wind farm to date was developed in France with an output of 60 MW.

The company opens its new headquarters in Ganderkesee in 2007 and establishes a Bulgarian subsidiary in Varna, followed in 2008 by the establishment of subsidiaries in Portland, USA. In 2009, almost 100 MW of wind energy capacity was commissioned in Germany and France with various wind turbine manufacturers: Siemens, Enercon, Vestas, Fuhrländer; the company has more than 500 MW installed capacity. In 2010 the first wind farm in the forest went into operation.

The company was sold to Axpo in July 2015 - at this point in time, Volkswind was operating a total of 29 wind farms with a total output of 145 megawatts (MW) and was acquiring an important project pipeline in France and Germany. Of these, 460 MW had a building permit, and a further 2,740 MW were in various stages of development.
