As bitters or herbal bitters are spirits with a combination of herbs called that should have a positive effect on digestion. They are often drunk as digestive schnapps or are part of long drinks . The bitter substances , which depend on the main herbal components, are said to stimulate stomach and bile secretion in particular . The alcohol content - and with liqueurs also the higher sugar content - tends to hinder the digestive effect.

According to the EU regulation, a bitter is a spirit with a predominantly bitter taste , which is achieved by flavoring with natural or nature-identical flavors, and the bitter must have an alcohol content of at least 15%.

Many products known as bitters are actually liqueurs due to their high sugar content of over 100 grams per liter . They are known as herbal liqueurs, often also as "semi-sweet".
