Vollenburg
Vollburg (Vollberg) is a Won in Kleinkems, in the municipality of Efringen-churches in the district Lörrach ( Baden-Württemberg ). Due to misinterpretations, it was long assumed that there was a castle here in the Middle Ages , which was known as the Vollenburg.
history
On September 3, 1301, Abbot Berthold II of St. Blasien ceded part of the Vollenberg mountain to the Basel Bishop Peter von Aspelt . The abbot had the bishop assure him that a castle would never be built on the transferred land. Later chroniclers presumably derived from this document that there was a castle on the Gewann. In more recent treatises one comes to completely different conclusions: "When checking the original sources, however, there are no indications that the castle even existed."
The area was exploited as a limestone quarry, with an old mine tunnel being exposed around 1966, which was probably used for medieval to modern stone ore mining .
legend
According to a legend, the Vollenburg was a robber knight's castle that served as the basis for robbing travelers in the Rhine Valley. After an Italian bishop was attacked on his journey from Basel to Breisach , the people of Basel destroyed the Vollenburg. The robber baron escaped because he misled the pursuers about his escape route by inverted horseshoes.
