Volli Kalm (born February 10, 1953 in Aluste , Vändra , Estonia ; † December 23, 2017 ) was an Estonian geologist and university rector.

Life

Volli Kalm studied geology at the University of Tartu (1971–1976) and at the Estonian Institute of Geology (1980–1984) and as a postdoc at the Alberta University of Canada. Since 1986 he has taught at the University of Tartu and in 1992 became head of the Institute of Geology at the University of Tartu and was appointed professor of applied geology at the University of Tartu. From 1995 to 1998 he was Dean of the Faculty of Biology and Geography and from 1998 to 2003 Vice Rector of the University of Tartu, since 2012 its Rector.

He was also involved in numerous scientific organizations. Among other things, he was chairman of the Scientific Competence Council ( Teaduskompetentsi Nõukogu TKN) from 2009 to 2012 . Since 2012 he has been chairman of the board of the Sihtasutus Eesti Teadusagentuur research initiative .

The main areas of teaching and research were paleoclimatology and paleogeography as well as sedimentology and geoarchaeology .

In 2005 he was awarded the Order of the White Star ( Officer's Cross ) of the Republic of Estonia.
