The Wilhelmshaven prison museum depicts the history of the penal system. It is located on the premises of the Oldenburg prison , Wilhelmshaven department, in Wilhelmshaven .

There are only four museums in Germany that deal with the history of the penal system and are also accessible to the general public. On the basis of hundreds of Niedersachsen collected exhibits such as uniforms, firearms , edged weapons , effects and documents in the field of the penal system is offered to the visitors in the exhibition is a glimpse into the history of the penal system. history

The museum emerged from the initially only provisional exhibition in the former air raid shelter on the open day on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the building on Ölhafendamm, which was built in 1908 as a naval detention center.

In the course of time, the exhibition area was restructured or expanded. An extension attached to the bunker was rebuilt and today serves as a backdrop for a historic cell from the 1930s. In front of the “Father Seemann”, an old sentry box from stocks of the German Navy was set up, which was restored by prisoners.

The sponsor of the museum is the Förderverein Vollzugsmuseum Wilhelmshaven eV The Förderverein was founded in December 2011 with the aim of preserving and, if necessary, expanding the collection of the history of execution in the former air raid shelter on the grounds of the prison in Wilhelmshaven. Furthermore, he has set himself the task of supporting social, cultural and educational projects when working with prisoners in the Wilhelmshaven department, both financially and materially.

The series of events Culture in the Bunker has existed since 2012 . Readings and smaller concerts take place in the museum's exhibition room; Guests were the Wilhelmshaven crime writer Christiane Franke and the Oldenburg songwriters from Spieltrieb .

The premiere reading of the coastal crime novel Murder Between Ebb and Flow by the author Christiane Franke in April 2014 with a good 100 guests in the cafeteria of the Wilhelmshaven prison was organized by the Friends' Association and accompanied by a camera team from the NDR.

The Lower Saxony Minister of Justice Antje Niewisch-Lennartz (Greens) has been the museum's patron since December 2014 .

From March to July 2015, students of the Media Management and Journalism course at Jade University redesigned the entire corporate design of the Wilhelmshaven prison museum in a media project (under the direction of Professor Götz Greiner) and thus created a unified image, which creatively designed the museum and the history of the prison system supported.

On October 7, 2016, the Friends' Association organized a benefit reading with the actor Volker Lechtenbrink for the benefit of the " Weißer Ring " victim aid association in the prison cafeteria. The result of this event was over € 3,100.
