Volsbach (desert)
The Volsbach desert (also Folsbach) is located in the district of Wingerode in the Eichsfeld district in Thuringia .
location
The desert is about two kilometers northeast of Wingerode at the foot of the Zehnsberg (413 m) at an altitude of about 330 m. The Volsbach of the same name rises northeast of the former location, to the east is the Beurener Klosterholz (428 m). The federal highway 38 with the Etzelsbachtalbrücke runs immediately south.
History of the settlement
Volsbach was first mentioned in a document in 1281. With several glass furnaces, the place was an important glassworks location in Eichsfeld . The valley location on the Volsbach is still called Hüttengrund today .
The settlement probably still existed in 1534, 1548 and 1556. After that, Volsbach is referred to several times as desolate.
Current condition
Numerous hiking trails lead from the surrounding villages to the desert. Today you can still find the location of the church surrounded by ramparts and moats, a memorial stone reminds of this. Table and benches invite you to relax, information boards provide information about glass production and the history of the place.
