The Von Karman Institute for Fluid Mechanics (VKI, Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics ) is an international, non-profit educational and scientific organization that is particularly dedicated to research in the field of fluid mechanics and promotes this subject. The research relates to experimental and theoretical aspects of gas and liquid flows. The VKI was founded in 1956 and is located in Sint-Genesius-Rode , Belgium .
Areas
The VKI is divided into the following three areas:
- Aerospace Engineering
- Environment and Applied Fluid Mechanics
- Turbo machines and drives
history
In 1956 the VKI was established in the buildings of the aeronautical laboratory of the Belgian civil aviation authority Administration de l'Aéronautique . The institute's namesake, Theodore von Kármán , was the institute's first director until his death in 1963 .
financing
Funding is provided by twelve countries including Belgium and contract research activities. Clients and sponsors are government and international organizations as well as industry.
education
The VKI offers postgraduate training in fluid mechanics (research master's in fluid dynamics , a doctoral program, short training programs and lectures).
Employee
The VKI has a permanent workforce of around 100 people, including 21 research engineers and 16 professors. In addition to the permanent staff, around 190 students and temporary researchers are involved in the various academic programs.
Research institutions
The VKI operates around fifty different wind tunnels , turbo machines and other special test facilities.
