From sparrows and pigeons, roofs and hands is the second studio album by the Hamburg band Kettcar . It was released on March 7, 2005 at the label Grand Hotel van Cleef , which was co-founded by Kettcar.

History / meaning

After Kettcar had unexpectedly great success in 2002 with the debut album You and how much of your friends , a big trend towards German-language pop-rock followed. That is why critics and fans had very high expectations of the second Kettcar album. Less than a month in advance, Kettcar released the advance single 48 hours on the GHvC , as the Grand Hotel van Cleef abbreviates itself. The single met expectations and entered the German single charts . On March 7th, Von Spatzen und Tauben, Dächern und Hands was released and reached number 5 in the German album charts, which is why it is considered the band's final breakthrough album. On March 30th, Kettcar started a tour across Germany, Switzerland and Austria, almost all concerts were sold out in advance. In May 2005 the single Deiche was released and in November Balu .

style

The genre of Von Spatzen und Tauben, Rooftops and Hands falls into the genre of indie rock and indie pop. Reimer Bustorff describes the style as "guitar pop". All in all, the album is a little quieter than its predecessor and puts less emphasis on “wide-wall sound”, says Marcus Wiebusch . The rockiest track is Deiche , the quietest tracks are Balu and Nacht .

content

The title of the album comes from a line of text from the song Die Ausfahrt Zum Hauser Eltern (" (...) So where does it start, when will it end / with sparrows and pigeons, roofs and hands / the world full of men, the life of a boy / at first intentionally and then just devoured (...) "). It is based on the saying “Better to have a sparrow in your hand than a pigeon on the roof”.

The content of the album is covered by the topics love, friendship, dreams, hope and everyday situations. All the lyrics on the album were written by Wiebusch, only the lyrics of The Truth Is, We Have Nothing Been Done comes from the pen of Reimer Bustdorff. According to Wiebusch, “Understanding at the end that you have to carry on” is the central theme of the band and is consequently also reflected in Von Spatzen und Tauben, Roofs und Hands . The song Deiche is the only one on the album with a direct political message (" (...) A people get up again - great - the lights are still on at Aldi / you know: dykes break properly - or not (...) ").
