The title reading priest , ancient Egyptian Cheri-hebet , or Cheri-habet , describes a high office in ancient Egypt that was exercised by priests . The title has been used since the 1st dynasty . Reading priests accompanied funeral ceremonies with chants , prayers and litanies .
