William A. Ward

William Ayres Ward (born June 10, 1928 in Chicago , † September 13, 1996 in Providence ) was an American Egyptologist .

Ward studied first at Butler University in Indianapolis (BA in Religious History 1951) and then Egyptology at the University of Chicago (MA 1955) and Semitic Languages at Brandeis University (PhD 1958). He then taught in Beirut , first at the Beirut College for Women , and since 1963 at the American University of Beirut . From 1986 to 1996 he taught as a visiting professor at Brown University in Providence.

His main areas of research included the relationship between Egypt and the Levant , Egyptian-Semitic etymological studies, and scarabs and titles of the Old and Middle Kingdom.
