Vox analysis
Following federal referendums , so-called Vox analyzes have been carried out in Switzerland since 1977 with the aim of better understanding the voting behavior of the electorate in their substantive decisions.
Vox analyzes provide information about this
- who voted how,
- what the level of information was at which the decisions were made,
- which individually relevant reasons were decisive for the vote and
- which messages of the campaigns were understood and followed.
For this purpose, a representative sample of 1,500 (up to 2009: 1,000) persons entitled to vote is taken according to their values, political opinions and behavior, party and association membership, the level of knowledge of the submissions, the various aspects of the decision on the matter, the formation of opinions and the assessment of the importance of each submission questioned.
The Vox analyzes are well known and widely cited opinion polls both by politicians and the general public and enjoy a high level of acceptance. The Vox analyzes are evaluated by the political science institutes at the Universities of Bern , Geneva and Zurich . The research institute gfs.bern carries out the Vox surveys and has coordinated the project since the beginning.
The Vox analyzes are financially supported by the Swiss Federal Chancellery.
Because of the very high number of referendums at the national level in Switzerland and their complete research since 1977, the Vox analyzes are particularly suitable for documenting opinion-forming and decisions on political issues.
The data of the surveys are available for scientific research no later than one year after the voting via the FORS data archive. They have been used in various dissertations and research reports.
