Vulcano di Fango Grauzaria are a group of deep-sea mountains , specifically mud volcanoes in the Drake Strait north of the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands in Antarctica . They are located west of Elephant Island , occupy an area of about 495 km² and rise up to 185 m from the sea floor. The highest peak is 2594 m below sea level . The Vulcano di Fango flop is one of them .
Scientists from the BSR project carried out between 2003 and 2004 on board the research vessel Explora discovered them. They have been named after the Sernio / Grauzaria mountain range on the edge of the Aupa Valley in the Italian Alps (see also Rifugio Grauzaria ).
