Vwawa is a small town in the southwest highlands of Tanzania . It is the administrative center of the Songwe region , established in 2016 , and the Mbozi district .

At the time of the 2012 census, Vwawa had 56,256 inhabitants. The city is located 1602 meters above sea level in the southern highlands of Tanzania. The climate is warm and temperate, Cwb according to the effective climate classification . The rainfall of an average of 1217 millimeters falls in the rainy season from late October to early May, the months June to September are very dry. The month of October is the warmest month with an average temperature of 21.7 degrees Celsius, the coolest is July with 17.5 degrees.

Facilities and services

  • Health: There is a district hospital and a church-run mission hospital in the city.
  • Education: In a state secondary school in Vwawa, 1200 students are taught by 71 teachers, which corresponds to a teacher-student ratio of 1:17.
  • Water: In 2018, 24 percent of the population had access to clean and safe water.
  • Churches: The Anglican Church is the oldest in the city, but the Moravians Moravian Church and the Catholic Church are the largest denominations.

Economy and Infrastructure

  • Economy: The area around the city is dominated by agriculture, mainly beans, corn, cassava and coffee are grown.
  • Roads: The place is on the T1 trunk road from Dar es Salaam via Mbeya to Zambia .
  • Railway: The TAZARA railway line also runs through Vwawa. It is 930 kilometers by train to Dar es Salaam and 60 kilometers to the Tunduma / Nakonde border station . In 2019, 100,000 tons of maize were exported to Zambia via Vwawa train station .

  • Mbozi Meteorite : One of the largest meteorites on earth was found twelve kilometers east of the city center, an iron meteorite three meters long and 1 meter high.
