history

Franz-Josefs-Höhe in 1901

The beautiful view in the immediate vicinity of Karlovy Vary was upgraded for tourist purposes by the construction of a brick observation tower in the pseudo-Gothic style in the form of an Arab minaret. Construction of the tower began in 1876. This makes it the oldest observation tower in the area around Karlovy Vary. Its inauguration took place a year later under the name Franz-Josefs-Höhe . At the end of the First World War the tower was shortened to Josefshöhe and after 1945 the tower was renamed Vyhlídka Karla IV.

The observation tower has been a national monument since 1958.

From the tower there is a view over the city forest to the spa district of Karlovy Vary, to the north of the ridge of the western Ore Mountains with the Keilberg , to the west of the Falkenau basin and to the south of the Duppau mountains .

The observation tower can be reached in about 20 minutes from the Grandhotel Pupp . The most comfortable way leads from the middle station of the funicular to Diana through the forest up to the observation tower.
