The Falkenau Basin , formerly also Falkenau-Elbogen-Karlsbader Basin ( Sokolovská pánev in Czech ) forms a geomorphological unit in the Czech Republic . It is located in the northwest of Bohemia near Falkenau an der Eger ( Sokolov in the Czech Republic ) and has an area of ​​312 km². The basin extends with an average width of eight kilometers along the southern foot of the Erzgebirge.

The Erzgebirge rises to the north, and the Egergraben connects to the northeast . To the east it is bordered by the Duppau Mountains and to the south by the Kaiserwald . To the west, the Eger basin connects to the Kulmer threshold . The highest point is the Dvorský vrch ( Casperberg ) near Děpoltovice in the Chodau Basin at 573 meters , followed by the Drsný vrch ( Mariahilfberg ) located on the Kulmer threshold at 570 meters.

The Falkenau Basin is divided into four sub-units, the Kulmer Swell ( Chlumský práh ), the Chodovská pánev , the Schlackenwerther Basin ( Ostrovská pánev ) and the Zwodauer Basin ( Svatavská pánev ).

The main body of water is the Eger , which flows through the basin from southwest to northeast. From the Erzgebirge flow u. a. the Zwodau , Rolava and Bystřice as well as the Teplá from the Kaiserwald .

economy

The Falkenau Basin is the industrial center of Karlovarský kraj . Large deposits of brown coal are stored in the area , which are mined in open-cast mining. After the North Bohemian Basin , the Falkenau Basin is the second largest lignite mining area in the Czech Republic. This led to the destruction of large parts of the natural landscape and the demolition of several villages. There are two large brown coal power plants near Tisová. The largest air separation plant in the Czech Republic has been operating in the Vřesová power plant since 2005. There are also kaolin deposits and mineral springs. The spa town of Karlovy Vary is located on the southern edge of the basin .

Other towns in the Falkenau Basin are Chodov , Březová , Habartov , Hroznětín , Loket , Nová Role , Nové Sedlo , Ostrov and Sokolov .
