Anatya is a genus of dragonflies consisting of two species. The genus belongs to the Brachydiplacinae subfamilyand was described in 1889 by William Forsell Kirby . Thenewly described species Anatya anomala servedas the generotype . The distribution area extends from central Mexico to the south of Brazil as well as to Bolivia and Paraguay .

features

Anatya species are medium-sized dragonflies and reach lengths between 30 and 40 millimeters. The basic color of the species is black and blue. The abdomen is mostly black with light bluish and yellowish spots on the upper half of the sides of the first through seventh segments . The part of the chest where the wings attach, the so-called pterothorax , is pale blue in color. The postfrons are black to metallic blue or yellow with - in adult males - light blue eyes. The wings are transparent and strikingly narrow at the base of the hind wing. The median artery (mspl.) Is missing in the wing structure.

Habitat and way of life

The adults of the genus Anatya mostly live in smaller ponds and canals that are either exposed to direct sunlight or are in partial shade. The males sit in sunny spots with wings outstretched and abdomen pointing upwards, waiting for prey to fly past.
