Clubhouse WYC

The Württemberg Yacht Club ( WYC ) is a yacht club in Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance .

history

In January 1911 the Royal Württemberg Yacht Club was entered in the register of associations of the then Tettnang District Office. The construction of this facility and the creation of a small clubhouse began in the year it was founded. In 1920 the club had 358 members.

The founding of the club, inspired by King Wilhelm II , arose from the great enthusiasm and willingness to make sacrifices at the time for the development of a German fleet that reached deep into the inland. After careful preparations, the people of Württemberg followed the example of the Bavarians, Austrians and Badeners in 1911 by founding their own yacht club. In 1913, the paddle steamer Hohentwiel , King Wilhelm's state yacht , was put into service in Friedrichshafen .

The first stander, from its foundation to 1935, was adorned with a royal crown. This symbol was able to hold its own during the Weimar Republic. In the time of National Socialism , the royal crown was banned from the stander of the yacht club. On April 28, 1944, an Allied bomb squadron destroyed the clubhouse. The city's harbor was badly damaged, and the winter storage hall in Seemoos - with well over 100 boats - was hit directly.

The bosses of the House of Württemberg were and are closely linked to the WYC to this day, because they each provide the commodore of honor; from 1911 on these were: King Wilhelm II and Duke Albrecht , Duke Philipp and since then Carl Duke of Württemberg .
