Władysław Orkan , actually Franciszek Xawery Smaciarz (born November 27, 1875 in Poręba Wielka , Powiat Limanowski ; † May 14, 1930 in Cracow ), was a Polish writer of the Young Poland period, although neither he nor his contemporaries him the Have assigned modernity.

Life

Orkan was the second of three children in the family of a woodcutter Smaciarz and his wife née. Smreczak and was born as Franciszek Xawery Smaciarz. In 1898 he changed his family name to Smreczyński (based on his mother's maiden name). He made his first literary attempts at the grammar school in Cracow, under the pseudonym Orkan because of the propolian subject . Because of poor academic performance, he did not graduate from high school and returned to his home village without an Abitur. His literary debut took place in 1898 with a volume of short stories, to which Kazimierz Przerwa-Tetmajer wrote the preface . After 1900 he started building a house that later became the Orkans Biographical Museum (Muzeum Biograficzne Władysława Orkana), also called Orkanówka . Hurricane was accompanied throughout his life by financial worries and personal strokes of fate, such as the early death of his wife and the serious illness of his daughter.
