W. Fischer-Verlag

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The W. Fischer Verlag was a book publisher in Göttingen and later Remseck .

It was founded on June 20, 1948, the day of the currency reform , by Wilhelm Fischer in Göttingen. The main products of the publishing house appeared under the name Göttinger Jugendbücher (GJB), of which a total of well over 10 million copies were sold in the 1960s. Allegedly at that time a book from the publisher went over the counter every three seconds. Berti Breuer-Weber was one of the publisher's most successful picture and children's book artists . From 1954, first inspired by the soccer World Cup , the series Göttinger Current Sports Books was published.

In 1969 the publishing house with around 100 employees moved into a newly built company building at Stresemannstrasse 30. In 1981, the sole proprietorship was converted into a GmbH with registered capital of 250,000 DM , which was increased to 750,000 DM in 1985. The demographic development led to a drop in sales. In 1989 the publishing house was sold and the headquarters moved to Remseck am Neckar. In 1997 bankruptcy was filed, in 2008 the publisher disappeared from the scene for good.
