World Biographical Information System Online

The World Biographical Information System Online (WBIS Online) is a biographical reference book in the form of an online database , which on numerous biographical secondary works based. The publishing house calls it "the most comprehensive and extensive biographical database with information on people, families and groups from all classes and professions, from all countries and regions of the world [...]".

General

WBIS Online is based on the cumulative digitization of the microfiche editions of the Biographical Archives published by KG Saur Verlag . These cover - sometimes in different series - each a country, a language or cultural area and reproduce entries from biographical reference works in facsimile form. According to the publisher's own information, the database (as of 2009) comprises 8.4 million original biographical articles on more than 6 million people from around 8,600 reference works, published between 1559 and the beginning of the 21st century.

The conversion of the microfiche editions was completed in December 2010. Since then, all 30 biographical archives (with sub-volumes 58) are available in digital form. WBIS Online is now managed by the de Gruyter Group .

The German Research Foundation (DFG) has acquired a national license. This enables (after logging in and registering via DBIS ) free access for private individuals residing in Germany also from home via their private computer. The contents of the German Biographical Archive (DBA), which are only available to registered users in some state and university libraries, are excluded from free access for licensing reasons .

The accuracy of the content of the information in the digitized articles of the lexica is generally not assessed by WBIS.
