The combustion railcars VT1 and 2 of the Westfälische Landes-Eisenbahn were manufactured in 1928 by the German works in Kiel . They were purchased to rationalize passenger transport and were used as railcars until 1958. Then they were converted into driveless control cars and were in operation until the 1970s.

history

The railcars were put into operation in 1928 with the DWK serial numbers 160 and 161. They were among the first private railcars in West Germany. They were initially used on the Münster – Neubeckum railway line . The operating costs were almost half that of other railways. At times they performed services on the Borken – Burgsteinfurt railway line .

In 1935 and 1937, respectively, both cars were equipped with a diesel engine and redesignated. After the war, both cars were modernized again with newer diesel engines, whereby the wheelbase was enlarged. With the delivery of new railcars, the cars were only used on the Münster – Warstein route, then used as reserve vehicles and finally parked. In 1958 they were converted into control cars and continued in operation into the 1970s. By 1974 both cars were scrapped.

Constructive features

The vehicles belonged to the few of the German works in Kiel with two axles. In 1954 the wheelbase was increased by one meter and the running gear was designed with steering axles .

The car body was made of all-steel construction as a rivet construction. The roof was made of galvanized sheet steel. The inside of the side walls below the window parapet were made of pine wood with linoleum covering, above that made of polished plywood, the floor of the car consisted of 30 millimeter thick pine planks. The passenger compartment originally consisted of a third class compartment with wooden seats, the seat divider was 3 + 2. It was joined at the ends by the boarding rooms where the driver had his place of work. A total of 39 seats were available. In addition, there were six folding seats in the driver's cabs. The doors in the tapered ends were designed as sliding doors. In 1954 the passenger compartment was redesigned; An additional compartment of the 2nd carriage class with eight seats was installed, at the same time the luggage compartment was omitted. With this conversion, the vehicles received a transition door in the front wall.

The machinery was rebuilt several times. The cars were delivered with a DWK benzene engine and a mechanical TAG gearbox . In 1935 and 1937 210 hp diesel engines were installed, although the type or make is not known. In 1954, she received her third mechanical equipment in the Lippstadt workshop with the KHD AA8M517. The power transmission was converted to a hydraulic transmission. The running gear was changed and at the same time the regular pulling and buffing device was replaced by a Scharfenberg coupling .

The names of the vehicles changed several times. In order to avoid confusion with other WLE vehicles, only the first and the last designation are given. The roofs were painted an aluminum color, the base frames black, the upper part of the box between the windows ivory and the lower part dark red. After 1954 they had the usual WLE color combination in signal red with several horizontal white stripes.
