The 15th stage of the Tour de France 2019 took place on July 21, 2019. The 185 kilometer long mountain stage led from Limoux to Prat d'Albis above Foix . The stage start was at 12:05 p.m., the sharp start took place at 12:09 p.m. northeast of Cournanel .

Race course

There were several breakaway attempts, but they were unsuccessful. It took over an hour for a 36-strong breakaway group to establish itself. Also present were: Patrick Konrad , Romain Bardet , Mathias Frank , Tony Gallopin , Vincenzo Nibali , Damiano Caruso , Jan Tratnik , Rudy Molard , Sébastien Reichenbach , Nairo Quintana , Andrey Amador , Marc Soler , Pello Bilbao , Omar Fraile , Alexei Luzenko , Amund Grøndahl Jansen , Michael Woods , Simon Yates , Simon Geschke , Julien Bernard , Giulio Ciccone , Bauke Mollema , Daniel Martin , Lennard Kämna , Michael Matthews , Nicolas Roche , Jesús Herrada , Pierre-Luc Périchon , Anthony Perez , Ilnur Sakarin , Nils Politt , Roman Kreuziger , Romain Sicard , Guillaume Martin , Maxime Bouet and Amaël Moinard . After the refreshment zone, the leading group had extended their lead to around 3:30 minutes.

On the second ascent (Port de Lers) some drivers from the leading group had lost touch and were in the main field, the leading group only consisted of about 20 drivers. When crossing the summit, the leading group had a lead of over 5 minutes on the peloton. On the climb to the Mur de Péguère, the third mountain classification of the stage, Simon Geschke attacked from the leading group; shortly before the summit, Simon Yates went on the offensive and approached Geschke. At the same time, Mikel Landa  - with the help of his teammates Marc Soler and Andrey Amador  - pulled away from the peloton and ventured into the first group of pursuers. The field of drivers was divided into individual groups. Around 25 kilometers from the finish, the top duo had a lead of around one minute over the first group of pursuers.

At the foot of the Prat d'Albis (11.8 kilometers at 6.9%), the distance to the first group of pursuers (with around ten drivers) around Quintana, Bardet, Reichenbach, Martin and Kämna was 1:40 minutes, the distance to the favorites -Group around Julian Alaphilippe , Geraint Thomas , Egan Bernal and Emanuel Buchmann at about 2:30 minutes. Landa successfully joined the first chasing group about 9 kilometers from the finish. At one of the steepest parts of the final climb (8.7 kilometers from the finish), Simon Yates attacked and left Simon Geschke behind; Geschke could not keep up with the sudden acceleration of the British. Behind them, Landa responded with an attack and blew up the chasing group. Kämna was the only one who was initially able to keep up with Landa, but could no longer follow him after about two kilometers, and drove at his own pace. Landa continued to drive at a high pace and overtook Simon Geschke, who was about a minute behind Yates. At the same time, Thibaut Pinot took a powerful step away from the favorites group, who immediately worked a few meters away. Only Egan Bernal, Julian Alaphilippe and Emanuel Buchmann could follow him, other favorites like Steven Kruijswijk , Geraint Thomas, Nairo Quintana or Jakob Fuglsang had to let them go. 5 kilometers before the finish, Alaphilippe could no longer follow the other drivers and was later overtaken by Geraint Thomas, Alejandro Valverde and Steven Kruijswijk. Meanwhile, Pinot was able to break away with repeated attacks from Bernal and Buchmann. About 3 kilometers before the mountain finish, Simon Yates had a lead of over a minute over Landa and Pinot. Yates secured the stage win; For him it was the second Tour stage win in 2019, after he had already won the 12th stage in Bagnères-de-Bigorre . Thibaut Pinot took second place behind the stage winner. Mikel Landa crossed the finish line in third and was named the most combative driver of the stage.

The overall leader, Julian Alaphilippe, crossed the finish line in eleventh place; his lead over the direct rivals in the overall standings melted by about half a minute, only Thibaut Pinot was able to shorten the gap by over two minutes. Before the last day of rest, the gap in the overall ranking to second-placed Geraint Thomas was 1:35 minutes, to third-placed Steven Kruijswijk 1:47 minutes, fourth-placed Thibaut Pinot 1:50 minutes, fifth-placed Egan Bernal 2:02 minutes and sixth-placed Emanuel Buchmann 2 : 14 minutes.

The second day of rest followed in Nîmes .
