The 14th stage of the Tour de France 2019 took place on July 20, 2019. The originally 117.5 kilometer long mountain stage led from Tarbes to the Col du Tourmalet . Due to a demonstration against a planned pig fattening facility, the neutralized start was extended by 6.5 kilometers, the total length of the stage was shortened to 111 kilometers. The German Maximilian Schachmann ( Bora-hansgrohe ) no longer competed due to three breaks in his left hand that he suffered in a fall in the 13th stage . The stage start was at 1:35 p.m. at Halle Marcadieu , the sharp start took place at 2 p.m. west of Ossun .
Race course
After several attempts, a successful top group of 17 drivers was able to establish itself a few kilometers after the start. There were Peter Sagan , Alexis Vuillermoz , Vincenzo Nibali , Matej Mohorič , Matthieu Ladagnous , Carlos Verona , Luis León Sánchez , Sergio Henao , Lennard Kämna , Tim Wellens , Lilian Calmejane , Romain Sicard , Rein Taaramäe , Ilnur Sakarin , Marco Haller , Guillaume Martin and Élie Gesbert . After 30 kilometers she was able to work out a lead of about 3 minutes.
On the way to the Col du Soulor , the second ascent of this stage, the leading group had a lead of around 2:50 minutes on the main field. Nibali, Wellens and Gesbert attacked from the top group. Wellens consolidated his lead in the mountain classification . In the main field, the Movistar team took over the lead work and increased the pace, with many drivers no longer able to keep up; the peloton shrank to around 30 drivers. Behind the top trio was a group of five from Kämna, Sanchez, Calmejane, Sicard and Sakarin. After crossing the second mountain classification, the distance to the chasing group was about 30 seconds, to the peloton the distance was about 1:30 minutes.
Shortly after the intermediate sprint classification, the chasing group was able to catch up with the top trio, from now on an eight-man breakaway group led the stage. The distance to the peloton was less than a minute. Romain Sicard attacked around 28 kilometers from the finish. Shortly before the peloton could catch up with the chasing group, Élie Gesbert and Lilian Calmejane went on the offensive and tried to catch up with Sicard. On the way to the Col du Tourmalet , Sicard had a lead of almost a minute on the chasing duo and about 1:30 minutes on the peloton. Gesbert overtook Sicard around 16 kilometers from the finish. On the final climb, the Movistar team increased the pace in the peloton, whereupon several riders could no longer keep up. Favorites like Adam Yates (about 12 kilometers from the finish) or Nairo Quintana (about 10 kilometers from the finish) had problems and drove their own pace. Gesbert was asked by the pursuers, he was chosen by the jury as the most combative driver of the stage. Shortly afterwards, Team Ineos took over the lead and Warren Barguil took the opportunity to secure the stage victory as a soloist. The Frenchman managed to build a small lead, but the lead shrank and was caught up again. Because David Gaudu and Thibaut Pinot increased the pace. Several pursuers such as Bauke Mollema , Daniel Martin , Alejandro Valverde fell back in the last kilometers, a little later Jakob Fuglsang , Rigoberto Urán and Barguil had to let go - due to a further tightening of the pace by Team Jumbo-Visma (Kruijswijk, Laurens De Plus and George Bennett ). Shortly after the flame rouge , Geraint Thomas could no longer keep up and fell back, who was overtaken by Urán.
Six riders were now in the lead for the stage win: Emanuel Buchmann , Thibaut Pinot , Steven Kruijswijk , Egan Bernal , Mikel Landa and Julian Alaphilippe . In the final sprint, Pinot won the race and was also presented with the Jacques Goddet souvenir . Alaphilippe finished second and extended his lead in the overall standings. Third in the stage was Kruijswijk. Egan Bernal was again the leader in the junior competition . The Movistar team took the lead in the team classification .
