The Col du Soulor is a 1,474 meter high mountain pass in the French Pyrenees . It connects the Vallée d'Ouzom in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department with the Vallée d'Arens in the Hautes-Pyrénées department . The east ramp of the Col du Soulor is part of the Pyrenees high road " Route des Cols ", it leads from the top of the pass to the Col d'Aubisque .

Routing

The east ramp overcomes 19 kilometers of altitude 1,019 meters. The first three kilometers after leaving Argelès-Gazost to Arras-en-Lavedan already include 220 meters of altitude, then the 9 km route is quite flat to the last town of Arrens-Marsous at 875 meters above sea level. There a 9.5 km long cul-de-sac branches off into the upper part of the Vallée d'Arrens to the Pyrenees National Park . The upper, much steeper section of the pass road begins behind Arrens-Marsous. The bend route has an average gradient of 8.0% with a maximum of a good 10% shortly before the pass.

The main route D 918 continues after a short downward gradient over the Corniche on the rock face of the Cirque du Litor and then up to the Col d'Aubisque. It is extremely scenic.

The north ramp of the Col du Soulor is formed by the side road D 126. The town of Arthez-d'Asson is to be regarded as the beginning . The first ten kilometers in the narrow valley of the Ouzom River are still almost flat. The actual pass road begins in Ferrières at an altitude of 574 meters. The next four kilometers lead to the last town of Arbéost (819 m), followed by 655 meters in altitude over eight kilometers. After five kilometers, the road coming from the north turns to the east, where there is a panoramic view of the Cirque du Litor.

Tour de France

The Col du Soulor is often crossed by the Tour de France, nineteen times since 1947. In both directions, he has been rising classified the First Category. However, since it is mostly driven together with the Col d'Aubisque, it does not always count as a separate mountain classification for the dotted jersey . On the 17th stage of the Tour de France 2010 it was approached via the north ramp.
