Élie Gesbert (born July 1, 1995 in Saint-Brieuc ) is a French cyclist . He is considered a strong puncher and mountain rider.
Athletic career
Gesbert began his cycling career as a cyclocross rider . In 2013 he was two-time French junior champion in road racing and in the individual time trial , and he also won a stage of the International Peace Race for Juniors.
For adults, Gesbert drove as a stagiaire with the UCI WorldTeam FDJ at the end of 2015 , where he did not receive a regular contract and won a mountain stage of the UCI Nations' Cup U23 race Tour de l'Avenir . In 2016 he won a day part of the U23 stage race Ronde de l'Isard and from August became a contract driver for the UCI Professional Continental Team Fortuneo-Oscaro .
In 2017 he started the Tour de France for the first time , as the youngest in the field. On July 1st (his birthday) he was the first starter in the individual time trial of the first stage in Düsseldorf . On the tenth stage , he and Yoann Offredo attempted a 170-kilometer breakaway attempt and was recognized as the most combative driver for this. He finished the tour in 85th place.
At the start of the tour he came off the road for no apparent reason on the fifth stage and fell, but got away with minor injuries and was able to continue the tour. At the beginning of the 15th stage , shortly after the start, he was hit with his fist by the Italian Gianni Moscon , who was riding next to him , whereupon Moscon was excluded from the tour.
