history
Beginnings
The Suwanee River Jamboree first went on air in 1952. Early members at the time were Al Winburn and his Melody Rangers and Sandy Flowers. "Cousin" Clair Parker took over the comedy part from the start. In total, the show was broadcast by five different radio stations. The show was held every Saturday evening and lasted four hours, followed by a barn dance.
Most successful country show in Florida
By 1956, the Suwanee River Jamboree was considered the most successful country show in Florida. In addition, a half-hour sequence from the four-hour live broadcast was fed into the CBS network and could thus be heard throughout the southern United States. Most of the members came from near Live Oak and represented a cross-section of the country music of the time, from bluegrass to rockabilly . In 1958 the well-known Stanley Brothers took over the moderation of the show, although they had previously made guest appearances on the show. At the same time, Jim and Jesse and their band, the Virginia Boys , also became members of the show. The Suwanee River Jamboree has since had two of the most famous bluegrass groups in the United States as members. After the Stanley Brothers, Jim and Jesse McReynolds took over the show for about two years in the early 1960s. The last broadcast of the Suwanee River Jamborees was broadcast in 1962.
In 1984 the Suwanee River Jamboree Homecoming Concert was held, at which the old stars performed again, including Ralph Stanley (his brother Carter had died in 1966) and Jim and Jesse. The concert was held at the Stephen Foster State Culture Center . In 1985 a similar concert took place again.
