Career

After the musician Al Winburn was released from the US Army in 1953 , Winburn founded the Melody Rangers with Leroy McDaniel . Winburn had played with the Hillbilly Playboys since 1950 , and while serving in the military in Valdosta , Georgia , he had been a member of JC Johnson's Radio Cowboys .

With the Melody Rangers, Winburn performed around Florida and Georgia. The group quickly became a well-known act in the Suwanee River Valley and in 1954 got an engagement in the Suwanee River Jamboree from Live Oak , Florida. The show was run by the Stanley Brothers at the time and was considered very popular. In addition, the Melody Rangers got their own little show in the morning on WNER.

The Melody Rangers were one of the few country groups that used an electrically amplified bass at the time.
