Waba
Waba is a runtime environment for small computers or handheld computers. The virtual machine of Waba is WabaVM and can run programs in a subset of the programming language Java were implemented. Waba also provides a small class library .
In the Waba environment, Java applets are programmed that are executed in a WabaVM. For GUI programming, Waba provides some basic classes based on the AWT . Since Waba programs are practically simplified Java programs, they are also translated into bytecode using a conventional Java compiler .
The WabaVM is an early port of the Java runtime environment to various operating systems for small devices such as Palm OS or Windows CE , and can therefore be regarded as the forerunner of the Java Platform, Micro Edition . For the original version there is even a VM for MS-DOS , which means that Waba is the only way to create Java programs for MS-DOS computers. Other VMs run on Newton, Gameboy, iPaq and programmable calculators from Texas Instruments .
history
Waba was published in 1999 by Wabasoft Inc. and is under the GNU General Public License (GPL). The last version 1.0b, still available today, dates from February 2000.
Waba stopped developing in 2000. A successor is SuperWaba , which was developed by Guilherme C. Hazan independently of Waba since 2000. This contains considerable further developments, but does not support some of the older operating systems. In particular, there is no MS-DOS port.
