Guard houses of the Aachen city wall
The guard houses of the Aachen city wall were distributed along the inside of the Aachen city wall . The existence of guard houses is not recorded from the inner city wall (built from 1172). Some of the guardhouses of the outer city wall (built from 1300) are known by name, others were simply named after the city gate near which they were located. None of the guard houses of the Aachen city wall is still preserved today.
General
Most of the guard houses were built directly onto the city wall. As a rule, they had a monopitch roof that did not exceed the height of the wall and sloped away from the wall.
The guard houses served as a place to stay for the guards at the gates and towers and for storing weapons and ammunition.
In the guardhouses that were not directly at a city gate, there were oriels on the outside of the city wall for additional defense of the wall sections between the towers and gates , which were accessible directly from the guardhouse via a short corridor leading through the wall.
