The Wadi Dayqa Dam ( Arabic سد وادي ضيقة, DMG Sadd Wādī Ḍayqa ) is the largest reservoir in Oman . The associated dam consists of the 75 meter high and 410 meter wide main dam made of concrete, and a 48 meter high and 360 meter wide stone saddle dam.

Construction phase

The main dam was completed in 2009 and the entire structure was inaugurated on March 26, 2012. The dam passed its first stress test as early as 2010 during cyclone Phet, during which the water masses ultimately flowed off over the top of the main dam. Most of the construction work was carried out at night because of the high temperatures in the area. During the setting process, the concreting structures were cooled to around 15 ° C by water cooling. Today there is a park and a 1.281 m² visitor center on the dam.

geography

The dam is located in Muscat Governorate . In the Wilayat Quriat it seals off Wadi Dayqa, one of the few year-round water-bearing rivers in Oman, and absorbs the annual spring tides of the rainy season. The reservoir holds 100 million cubic meters of water on 350 hectares - about twice the average annual water volume of the wadi.

In addition to flood protection, the dam is used to supply drinking water to the Quriat region and the greater Muscat area. 35 million cubic meters of drinking and service water are to be provided annually. The water pipelines and pumping stations required for this are currently (as of February 2017) still under construction.
