Abdel Wael Zwaiter ( Arabic وائل زعيتر, DMG Wāʾil Zuʿaytar ; * 1934 in Nablus ; † October 16, 1972 in Rome ) was a Palestinian translator. Zwaiter's alleged liquidation was the first result of " Operation Wrath of God " after the attack in Munich in 1972 .

biography

Zwaiter was born in Nablus in the 1930s as the son of Adel Zwaiter. In Iraq he studied Arabic literature and philosophy at the University of Baghdad . Then Zwaiter went to Rome and acted there as the official representative of the PLO . He also worked as a translator for the Libyan embassy. In addition to his Arabic mother tongue, Zwaiter spoke French, Italian and English. During his time in Italy, Zwaiter began to translate the Arabian Nights from Arabic into Italian, but according to Emily Jacir he could not finish it. The Mossad suspected him of being a member of the terrorist organization Black September and put him on a so-called murder list. The Italian police interrogated him about a Black September bomb attack on an oil refinery, but released him afterwards. When he returned home on the night of October 16, 1972, he was murdered by two strangers with 12 shots. The case was never clearly resolved. The Israeli government denies any involvement.

Abu Iyad , the deputy head of the PLO, claimed that Zwaiter had spoken out clearly against terrorism.
