Gun safe

Gun safe

A gun safe is a steel or safe ( safe ) in which - depending on the dimensions and security level - a number of firearms and ammunition can be stored. The construction and security classification, locking and installation of a gun safe correspond to the safe . Various furnishing elements, such as weapon holders for the vertical storage of long guns and MPs , retaining clips for handguns and floors or lockable compartments for separating weapons and ammunition are offered.

The obligation to store weapons in secure containers or rooms results in Germany from Section 36 of the Weapons Act “Storage of weapons or ammunition” and Sections 13 and 14 of the AWaffV. The Weapons Act regulates how and in which security level weapons and ammunition are to be secured in a gun cabinet; There are restrictions, for example, on the number and joint storage of long and short weapons and ammunition. Weapons and associated ammunition may be stored together in weapon cabinets of resistance class 0 or higher; joint storage is not permitted in the weapon cabinets of resistance classes A and B, which are now only permitted in old stock. Up to 5 handguns and an unlimited number of long guns can be stored in weapon cabinets of security level 0, and in weapon cabinets of security level 1 an unlimited number of handguns and long weapons. If a weapon cabinet of security level 0 is anchored at the installation location with a tear-off weight of at least 200 kg, the number of handguns that may be stored in the cabinet increases to 10. (In weapon cabinets of security levels A and B, however, an "over- Cross storage ", i.e. the storage of long guns and handgun ammunition or handguns and long gun ammunition in a gun cabinet.) A steel cabinet (sheet metal cabinet without security classification) with a swivel lock or a similarly secure container is sufficient for the storage of ammunition that requires a permit.

The person entitled to purchase the weapons stored in the weapon cabinet may only grant access to the weapon cabinet to other persons entitled to purchase, this also and especially applies to access by family members. In shooting clubs, a certificate of competence is required for permission to access a gun cabinet, which is only issued after a course by a superordinate umbrella organization (district or district shooting association). A gun cabinet must be set up in such a way that a burglar must overcome additional security measures in advance.

As a rule, the requirements of the Weapons Act relate to private living quarters; In unoccupied buildings such as hunting lodges, a maximum of three long guns may be stored in a weapon cabinet of resistance class 1; For storage in sports centers or rifle homes, a storage concept must be drawn up with the weapons authorities - the assessment of the insurance company is also important here. In addition to the hunting authorities , police advice centers and LKA can also provide assistance.

Situation in Switzerland

The Swiss legislature regulates the safekeeping of weapons in the private sector. The container is not precisely defined. The weapon must be protected from access by third parties and stored separately from the ammunition. The Department of Defense, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS) draws up its own regulations for the shooting ranges for off-duty shooting . These are regulated in the directive for technical matters relating to shooting systems for non-service shooting . If no armories can be built, weapons safes of at least level B / S2 are permitted. The closures always have to be kept in separate containers. Guns and ammunition must never be kept in the same magazine / gun cabinet. The same requirements for construction and security level apply to ammunition and weapons.
