The city ​​government and city parliament elections in Lucerne and Littau took place on June 14, 2009 after the people of Littau decided on June 17, 2007 to merge with Lucerne. The joint government and parliament, which was introduced on January 1, 2010, were elected on this day.

City Parliament election

In the parliamentary elections, the Social Democratic Party emerged as the strongest force with the Young Socialists with eleven seats in the new city parliament , but lost three seats compared to the previous election result. The Social Democrats were followed by the Christian Democratic People's Party with ten seats, which won two seats, and the FDP with nine seats, which won one seat. The Green Liberal Party made it into the city parliament with three seats. The Swiss People's Party lost two of its nine seats and ended the election with seven seats.

The number of seats in the city parliament remained unchanged at 48 seats. A total of 224 people from Littau and Lucerne applied on 14 lists.

City council election

The city council determined the city council elections. Five seats were allocated, whereby in the first ballot on June 15, 2009 only four previous Lucerne city councilors were re-elected. The Lithuanians mayor Stefan Roth of the Christian Democratic People's Party failed to reach the common city government because he lacked 96 votes to reach more to the absolute.

Urs W. Studer was confirmed as mayor with 10,189 votes, unopposed. Isolated people received 208 votes. The turnout in the city council elections was 32.1 percent. The absolute majority was 8023 votes. The following people did not achieve this: Stefan Roth (CVP, 7,927 votes), Stefanie Wyss (Young Greens, 4,633 votes), Stocker Beat (independent, 3,804 votes), David Roth (Young Socialist, 3,383 votes) ), René Kuhn (SVP, 2,346 votes).

Since only four people had an absolute majority, there should have been a second ballot. Candidates had to apply for the second ballot. However, Stefan Roth was elected fifth city council member on June 19, 2009 after no one except Roth had submitted the candidacy for the second ballot.
