Elections to the National People's Assembly in Angola in 1986

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1986 elections to the National People's Assembly in Angola took place on December 9, 1986 and were sham elections . Only the candidates from the only legal party in the then one-party state of Angola , the Marxist-Leninist state party Movimento Popular de Libertação de Angola (MPLA) , were on the ballot papers .

A system of indirect elections and candidate-finding by committees guaranteed that only candidates who were acceptable to the state party could be elected. 289 seats were awarded in this way. Candidates had to be members of the ruling MPLA party and answer questions from voters at public meetings.
