Elections to the National Assembly of Angola 2017
The 2017 elections to the National Assembly of Angola (Portuguese: Eleições para a Assembleia Nacional de Angola 2017 ) took place on 23-26 August 2017 and were the fourth multi-party elections to the National Assembly since the country gained independence in 1975. According to the constitution, the Lead candidate of the winning majority party automatically President. João Lourenço of the MPLA , which has ruled since 1975, won the election with 61 percent of the votes cast.
background
Originally it was expected that long-time President José Eduardo dos Santos would run again and would only step down during his term in office. In December 2016, however, the MPLA elected the MPLA's then Defense Minister and Deputy Chair, João Lourenço , as its candidate for the parliamentary elections. Lourenço is considered a close and loyal confidante of dos Santos. The MPLA elected Bornito de Sousa as an alternate candidate.
On April 26, 2017, President dos Santos announced August 23, 2017 as the election date. The official campaign period ran from July 22nd to August 21st.

Results
The first projections already showed a clear victory for the ruling MPLA, albeit significantly weaker than in the two previous elections. The election commission announced the final election results on September 6, 2017.
Isaías Samakuva, chairman of UNITA, questioned the results on August 27th. His party lodged an objection. However, the Constitutional Court rejected the objection on September 13. João Lourenço was introduced to the office of President on September 26, 2017.
