Elections to the National People's Assembly in Angola 1980

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1980 elections to the National People's Assembly in Angola were sham elections . Only the candidates from the only legal party in the then one-party state of Angola , the Marxist-Leninist state party Movimento Popular de Libertação de Angola (MPLA) , were on the ballot papers .

In September 1980, the new President José Eduardo dos Santos made elections to a National People's Assembly possible through a constitutional amendment . A system of indirect elections and candidate-finding by committees guaranteed that only candidates who were acceptable to the state party could be elected.
