The Leipzig I constituency was a state electoral district for the state election in Saxony in 1990 , the first state election after the re-establishment of the state of Saxony. It had constituency number 5. For the state elections in 1994 , the constituency structure was changed as a result of the district reform, and the number of constituencies was reduced from 80 to 60. The area of ​​the constituency of Leipzig I became part of one of the six constituencies in the city of Leipzig.

The constituency area comprised the city district center I with the residential districts 115-130 and the city district West I with the residential districts 702-729.

55,776 people were eligible to vote. The turnout was 65.7%. 2.0% of the votes cast were invalid. Joachim Dirschka (CDU) was elected as a direct candidate. It received 35.8% of all valid votes.
