The Waikaretaheke River is a river in New Zealand Region Hawke's Bay on New Zealand's North Island . It is the outflow of Lake Waikaremoana . The river rises from the southeast coast of the lake and flows in a southeast direction to join the Waiau River 20 km northwest of Wairoa . The State Highway 38 follows a large part of the river course.
