Lake Wakutama ( Japanese 湧 玉池 , Wakutama-ike ) is a Japanese hot spring lake located on the grounds of the Shinto Shrine Fujisan Hongū Sengen Taisha in Fujinomiya in Shizuoka Prefecture . It was named a natural monument in November 1944 and a national “special natural monument” in 1952 due to its water, which gushes out as an underground river with meltwater from Mount Fuji through several layers of lava and basalt Heisei time ”. The lake is named after a poem by Taira no Tanemori (? -991) from the Heian period , which describes the air bubbles rising from the bottom of the lake.
The water temperature of the approximately 3.5 liters that gush out of the spring per second is 13 ° C. The water is considered very pure water and is used for ritual cleansing ( 水垢 離 , mizugori ).
