Birkerteich forest pool
The Waldbad Birkerteich is an open-air swimming pool opened on June 30, 1952 in the Lower Saxony district town of Helmstedt in Germany . It is located in the middle of the Lappwald ridge .
Plant and use
The outdoor pool area has a total area of 27,500 m². There are three pools. The swimmer's pool, which consists of eight swimming lanes, each 50 m long, has a size of 21 × 50 m. At the end of the swimming pool, separated by a starter bridge, there is the diving pool with a size of 18 × 21 m and a unique diving tower . It has two three-meter diving boards, a five-meter and a ten-meter jumping platform. Next to the tower is a one-meter springboard on each side. The non-swimmer's pool has an irregularly curved shape and a water slide . The total water area of the Waldbad Birkerteich is 2,200 m², the water volume 4,250 m³.
Cultural monument
Due to its overall concept and the state of preservation of the pool, which is rarely found, the entire facility with the water basin and diving platform, the changing area, the sunbathing area with trees and the sun meadow was included in the list of cultural monuments by the state of Lower Saxony in 1999 . It is also used for leisure and sports events.
Support association
In 2000, the city council of Helmstedt decided to close the pool because of the high maintenance costs. However, an interest group collected around 10,000 signatures against this closure. In 2001 a support association was founded that has supported the bathroom financially ever since. The city of Helmstedt invested a total of € 900,000 in renovating the pool. The sponsoring association also made available around € 100,000 from membership fees and donations.
