The Phoenix sylvestris , Indian Forest Date Palm or simply Indian forest palm ( Phoenix sylvestris ) is a plant from the genus of date palms ( Phoenix ). The home is India , Nepal , Myanmar and Pakistan . It supplies sugar that is obtained in the trunk.
In terms of soil type and soil reaction, this species does not have any special requirements, but prefers fresh to moist locations.
description
This palm reaches heights of growth of 9 to 15 m and is characterized by the typical tuft of large, gray-green to blue-green pinnate leaves . This species is dioecious gendered diocesan .
use
The fruits taste bland and are only used for propagation.
The sugar content in the sieve tubes is 3 to 6% towards the end of the growth period of a year in which the new leaves are formed and the plant is thus assimilated vigorously .
Some old leaves are removed to produce sugar. Then the trunk is cut and the escaping juice is drained into a vessel via a bamboo tube. This allows up to 9 liters of juice to be obtained daily. This amount should expire over a period of 50 days and contain up to 14% sugar.
The juice is then heated and thickened and processed into a brownish palm sugar (jaggery). It can also be fermented into "lagmi" or date wine .
This species is also often offered as an ornamental plant , as it survives well in temperate climates and is very location-tolerant.
