Wegscheide forest cemetery
The Wegscheide forest cemetery is a war cemetery . It is located about 1 km south of the current Wegscheide country school home on the L 2905 state road in the forest on the way to Rosskopf , near Bad Orb in the Hessian Main-Kinzig district .
During World War II, POW camp IX consisted of the two main camps A in Ziegenhain (Schwalm) and camp B near Bad Orb . Camp B had existed since 1939 and after the German attack on the Soviet Union in 1941, many prisoners of war from the area were held in it, who were housed in a separate area, the "Russian camp". According to contemporary witness reports, these were treated particularly inhumanely. After the war, the dead of the western allies were transferred to other war graveyards. The Soviets were buried in this newly created cemetery.
In 1941/42, death certificates were issued for 365 Soviet prisoners of war who had died. Those known by name are noted on a board at the cemetery. After that, no more documents were issued and most of the deceased are not known by name.
