The nightjar ( Caprimulgus batesi ) is a species of bird from the nightjar family (Caprimulgidae).

It occurs sporadically in the south of Cameroon , in Zaire , in the southwest of the Central African Republic , in Gabon and in the east of the Republic of the Congo to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and to the west of Uganda .

Their distribution area mainly includes primary rainforest , clearings and forest edges, also dense secondary forest .

The Latin name refers to George Latimer Bates .

The nightjar is 29–31 cm tall and weighs between 89 and 112 g. It is a large, dark-colored forest bird, the upper side including the upper wings is dark brown with broad stripes, spotted black-brown. The parting is gray. A neck band cannot be delimited. There are white spots on the side of the throat. The male has small white spots on the two outer tail feathers. "

Way of life

The diet consists of fishing horrors , crickets , beetles , grasshoppers , moths and ants .

The breeding season is between December and January in Gabon, between February and March in Cameroon and possibly all year round in Zaire.
