history

In the second half of the 19th century there were around 50 to 70 breweries in today's Wuppertal urban area, most of which were small house breweries, while large production facilities were an exception. In 1867, Friedrich Wilhelm Hollmann founded the Waldschloß brewery, three of its own wells guaranteed pure water. A residential street called "Hollmanns Böschken" above the former brewery still reminds of the company's founder today. The brewery remained in the family for 100 years. The increasing competition from inexpensive foreign beers and disagreements among the growing number of family members led to the sale to the Wicküler brewery in 1967. When new investments in technical operations were required in 1988, the Waldschloß brewery was shut down and production and bottling of the Waldschloß brands (Pils, Export, Alt and Malz) took place in the Wicküler brewery from now on. At that time, 34 employees had ensured an annual output of 150,000 hectoliters.

monument

The former brewery building at today's Märkische Straße 44 was built from bricks in 1886 and is part of a brewery facility that has grown over decades. The building still preserved is one of the largest facilities in the Wuppertal city area and therefore an important testimony to the economic and social history of Wuppertal. The historical remains that still exist are among the few surviving examples that document brewing in the 2nd half of the 19th century. Preservation and use are therefore in the public interest in accordance with Section 2 (1) DSchG for scientific and urban historical reasons, which is why it was entered as a monument (monument number 2526) in the Wuppertal monument list in 1992 .
