Walenty Winid

Walenty Winid (* 1894 ; † after October 1, 1943 Auschwitz concentration camp ) was a Polish scientist for economic geography .

Life

He studied history and philosophy at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow from 1917 to 1919. At the University of Poznan he continued his studies in philosophy, geography and economics from 1920 to 1922.

He started working as a teacher in 1919. In 1925 he obtained a doctorate to become Dr. phil. In 1927 he traveled to the USA to deepen his studies in Chicago and New York. At the University of Poznan in 1931 he took up a teaching position in geography.

He obtained his habilitation with a topic on anthropogeography in 1935. From 1935 to 1937 he took over the leadership of a working group at the Instytut Baltycki in Gdynia . Then he was appointed as an associate professor at the Cracow Commercial Academy in the Institute of Economic Geography. He developed a formula according to which settlements should be laid out at a certain distance on the points of rectangles. This consideration received international attention in various publications.

In 1938 he took up lectures in philosophy at the Jagiellonian University. On Monday, November 6, 1939, he was arrested by SS-Sturmbannführer Bruno Müller with over 100 professors as part of the Krakow special campaign and deported to Sachsenhausen concentration camp . There he was released to Krakow on February 8, 1940 with several other scientists.

Since he could no longer work at the university, he taught as a teacher and worked in the city's education authority. He also supported prisoners in the concentration camps in an organization. When he was also teaching illegality, he was arrested by the security police (SiPo) and taken to Montelupich prison , where he was held for several months.

On October 1, 1943, he was deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp , where he died under unexplained circumstances.
