Valery Chechelashvili ( Georgian ვალერი ჩეჩელაშვილი ; born March 17, 1961 in Tbilisi ) is a Georgian politician and diplomat . The economist was Georgia's finance minister from February to June 2005. From November 2005 to September 2006 he was Deputy Foreign Minister. On September 26, 2006 he was elected General Secretary of GUAM . On June 1, 2007, he took up his office.

Life

In 1983 he graduated from the Faculty of International Relations and International Law at Kiev University . Area of ​​expertise: international economic relations. In 1987 he was chief engineer at the Ministry of Light Industry of Georgia . In the same year he moved to the Association of State Spas of Georgia, Sakkurorti, as deputy head of department .

In 1989 he joined the Georgian Foreign Ministry. First he was First Secretary, then Deputy Chief of the Economic Relations Committee, and finally Head of the Economic Relations Department. In 1994 he became ambassador to Ukraine and in 1996 he was also ambassador to Moldova . In 1998 he became Deputy Foreign Minister. In April 2000 he moved to the Permanent International Secretariat of Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSCE PERMIS) as the third Secretary General . In August 2004 he became ambassador to Russia .

After the death of Prime Minister Zurab Schwania , he was considered the favorite of Parliament Speaker Nino Burjanadze to succeed him as head of government.

On February 17, 2005, the Georgian parliament elected him finance minister at the proposal of Prime Minister Zurab Nogaidelis . Chechelashvili resigned from the ministerial office on June 29 because of a corruption scandal at the head of the Tbilisi tax authority. President Saakashvili had described him as having personal integrity, but called on him to draw political conclusions. He returned to the diplomatic service and was ambassador to Switzerland from September 2005 . In November 2005 he became Deputy Foreign Minister of Georgia, in September 2006 he moved to the office of Secretary General of GUAM.

Chechelashvili is married and has three children. He speaks Russian, English and French.
