Entrance to the Wales National Velodrome

The Geraint Thomas National Velodrome of Wales is a cycling center with velodrome in Wales Newport . It is located in the Newport International Sports Village .

The Velodrome is home to one of three internationally recognized cycling tracks in the United Kingdom to date , alongside the National Cycling Center in Manchester and the Lee Valley Velodrome in London . The track is 250 meters long and made of pine wood and was designed by Ron Webb . It was opened in 2004 and has since been used for national championships and for training the national track cycling elite. The grandstands offer space for 500 spectators.

The Velodrome also has other multifunctional sports rooms, strength and fitness rooms. It is also the seat of the Welsh cycling association Welsh Cycling . The velodrome is operated by Newport City Council.

The cycling center was initially called Wales National Velodrome . In August 2018 it was renamed the Geraint Thomas National Velodrome of Wales in honor of Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas , who is from Wales .
