Valya Mladenowa Balkanska ( Bulgarian Валя Младенова Балканска ; born January 8, 1942 ) is a world-famous Bulgarian folk singer . With the folk song "Islel e Delju Chajdutin" ( Bulgarian Излел е Делю Хайдутин , German "And went Delju the Heiducke ") from the Rhodope Mountains , she is the only Southeast European musician to be heard on the record " Voyager Golden Record ".

She was born on January 8, 1942 near the small southern Bulgarian village of Arda , Smolyan Oblast , in the Rhodope Mountains . Since she was young, she has been singing the typical Bulgarian folk songs of her home region. She has more than 300 Bulgarian folk songs in her repertoire. She became world famous after she recorded the song "Islel e Delju Chajdutin" in 1972 together with the Gaida player Dimitar Petrowski . This song was recorded in 1977 with a further 26 pieces of music on a record that was sent into space on the interstellar space probes Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 .

Balkanska works with the “Rhodopa State Ensemble for Folklore Songs and Dances” from Smoljan, with whom she has appeared as a soloist since 1960. Her album "Glas ot wetschnostta" ( Bulgarian Глас от вечността , German "Voice from Eternity") is a compilation of her best songs and was released in 2004.

In 2002 the singer was honored with the medal "Stara Planina" for her services to Bulgarian music.
