The Walker Mountains are a mountain range of mountain peaks and Nunatakkern , which extends in an east-west orientation over the entire length of Thurston Island off the Eights coast of the west Antarctic Ellsworthland .
The mountains were discovered during an overflight on February 27, 1940 as part of the United States Antarctic Service Expedition (1939–1941). The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named it in 1952 after Lieutenant William McCreary Walker (1813-1866), captain of the schooner USS Flying Fish , one of the expedition ships of the US polar explorer Charles Wilkes in the United States Exploring Expedition (1838-1842).
